20th, 2010 Dear Member Meeting
with Receiver: Last evening the Liaison Committee,
which represents the Mens and Ladies Clubs, met with the Receiver, Dara Kelly
to discuss major operational matters and arrangements for 2010 subscription
payments. Mr Kelly reported on the work being
done to recover the situation following the "landslip" at the 6th
hole. So far the green has not been affected and every effort is being made
to maintain this position. Our Club President, Tom Bryan, and other members
with professional expertise on these matters have been working with the
Contractors on a no fee basis and this is greatly appreciated by all
concerned. We are pleased to hear that the major drainage programme, with a
budget of €85,000, will not be affected by this latest development and will
continue to be implemented just as soon as the course can take the machinery
involved. In relation to the 2010 golf
yeat (1 March 2010 to 28 February 2011) the subscription for the
year is being held at €1,000 per member and €1,500 per couple. As last year
also, it has been agreed that these amounts will be paid to an account
controlled by the Club and one-twelfth will be transferred to the
Resort/Receiver on a monthly basis. The effect of this will be to provide a
solid protection for members contributions in these uncertain times. Given
the desire all round to increase the number of Lady members in the Club a
special Year 1 arrangement has been agreed whereby new Lady members will be
offered a 50% reduction on their fees in their first year. The effect of
this will be to reduce the €1,000 to €500 for a new Lady member and
where she is part of a couple the fee for the couple be €1,250
in her first year as a member. Those members who attended the
AGM will recall that the Receiver was proposing the introduction of a
€200 Social Levy per member (€300 per couple) payable in advance towards
members purchase of food and beverage for the year ahead. The aim was
to generate additional revenue for the Resort and at the same time to
encourage members to use the facilities more and to increase the
"social" aspect in the Club. Having considered the matter in
great detail and following extensive discussions with the Receiver the
following has now been agreed in this regard. The Social Levy will be €100
per individual or €150 per couple and will be payable to the Resort at the beginning
of the year. This amount can be recovered throughout the year as payment for
food, beverage, accommodation, green fees and golf shop purchases. The
existing 10% discount on food and beverage purchases by members and the
normal reduction for green fees for members guests will continue to apply.
The Committee feels that the above is a reasonable compromise in all the
circumstances and is one which we trust will have the desired effects
for the Resort and the Golf Club. In this regard also it is
the intention of the Clubs to organise more social activities for members in
the year ahead. The Resort will probably issue
invoices for membership fees and social levies in early February. Committee
Meeting: At last nights Committee Meeting the
following were among the matters discussed. At the commencement of the
proceedings condolences were expressed to the families of the late Larry
Kinsella and Maeve Hayes and to Joe Gardner and Albert Crowley and
their families on the deaths of their mothers. It was decided that the
funds generated at our Valentines Scramble on Sunday 14 February would
be donated to the relief of distress and the rebuilding of Haiti. It was also decided that for the
coming golf year, starting with a trial period in March, that rather than
have a "Sunday" competition we will have a "Weekend"
competition. The precise arrangements for this
will be communicated to members closer to that time but in essence it will
mean that members can play in the Club competition during Members tee times
on either the Saturday or Sunday mornings. This arrangement will not be
available for the Golfer of the Year (GOY) events which will be Sunday only. The full schedule of fixtures will
soon be posted on the website and an individual calendar of events will be
circulated to you soon. The Committee continues to be very grateful to Peter
Pedersen for all his work in keeping the website updated with Club
information. Regards John Horan Hon. Secretary February
10th, 2010 Dear Member Following last night's Committee
meeting I have been asked to bring a number of matters to the attention of
members. Valentines
Scramble: Our annual Valentines Scramble takes
place on Sunday next (14th) and you are requested to get your name down on
the draw sheet as soon as possible. Registration is at 9.00 a.m. for a 9.30
tee-off. There will be light refreshments served afterwards at the
presentation of prizes. Surplus funds from this event will be given to the
relief of distress and the rebuilding of Haiti. We would
"love" to see as many of you as possible on the day. Club
Levies: Members will shortly receive their
annual subscription invoices from the Receiver, but separately we would ask
members to pay their Club Levies (GUI/Golfsure/etc.) of €55 as soon as
possible. This can be done by direct payment to the Starter on a Sunday
morning or by sending your crossed cheque (payable to Tulfarris Golf
Club) to Niall Robinson, Hon Treasurer, Tulfarris Golf Club,
Blessington, Co Wicklow. Please be sure to include your name with the
payment. New
Members: I am pleased to tell you that at last
night's meeting the Committee approved applications for 20 new members
(including 2 new Junior members). We expect to appoint a Junior Convenor in
coming weeks to get things moving for this important group. Fixtures: With your Membership renewal invoices
you will receive the current Conditions/Rules of Club Competitions and a
complete 2010 fixture list. As mentioned previously our Competitions will
become "Weekend" Competitions for a trial period from early March,
playable on Saturday or Sunday mornings. The only exceptions will be Golfer
of the Year (GOY) events which are highlighted on the fixture list. In this
regard please note that, although not shown as such, the Presidents Prize on
Sunday 27 June is a GOY event. Interclubs: The Committee
has decided that the Club will participate in the following Inter Club
Competitions this year: Barton Cup(GUI
), Provincial Towns Cup(GUI), Pierce Purcell Shield(GUI) Brennan Cup(Arklow
G.C.), South Leinster Trophy(Carlow G.C), Lisheen Trophy (South
County G.C.) Members
interested in participating in any of the above should print their names and
contact details on the various competition sheets on the Club Noticeboard.
Further details will be communicated in due course by the individual team
managers or by the Interclub Coordinators, Noel Reilly and Paul Fitzpatrick. "Two's"
money: If you are good enough (or lucky!) to
get a two on a hole and be entitled to a share of the "two's" money
please note that this must be collected within 3 months - otherwise it will
be lodged to the Club's account. Fantastic
Score: There have been some really good
scores in the last few rounds of the Winter League but, PN Whelan's score
last Sunday was "something else". The following is how it
appears on the "How did I do" golf website. Mr Padraig Whelan - New Exact Hcp
5.9.
37
points and 4 under Par Gross for 14 holes - well done Padraig. Regards in golf John Horan Hon. Secretary February
10th, 2010 Dear Member Good
news! I have just received confirmation
from the Receiver that approval has been given for the work to commence on
the stabilisation and restoration of the 6th hole. This will involve
extensive work in ensuring that the 6th green remains intact and that the
lake surrounds are restored to their former glory. I understand that the lake
may be slightly bigger than before. ("Oh no" I can hear many of us
say, but looked at another way it will mean increased sales of golf balls for
the hard pressed manufacturers!). The work is commencing immediately
with a target date for completion which should see the hole back in play
before the end of March at the latest. This is important for the Club as we
have two interclub matches with home draws in April. By the way, have you put
your name down in the golf shop for any of the interclub competitions teams? In a similar vein, the Receiver has
confirmed that the €85,000 budgeted to be spent on drainage work elsewhere on
the course remains unaffected by this additional work. The drainage programme
will get underway fully just as soon as course conditions permit the use
of the appropriate machinery. No
such thing as a free lunch! The Receiver has also told me that
the Invoices for renewal of membership will be issuing in the next few days. For ease of reference the annual fee
for the year 1 March 2010 to 28 February 2011 will be €1,000 and in addition
a social levy of €100 is payable at the beginning of the golf year. This
latter amount can be recovered throughout the year as payment for food,
beverages, accommodation, green fees and golf shop purchases. For couples the amounts are €1,500
and €150. For Juniors the amount is
€100 membership fee with no levy. All of these amounts are payable to
Tulfarris Golf Club. Separately, there is a further
requirement to pay levies of €55 for all members of the mens club and €80
for the ladies. Again these amounts should be paid
to Tulfarris Golf Club or Tulfarris Ladies Golf Club as appropriate and
should be paid in a separate cheque. New Members: I would remind you that further new
members will be welcomed in both the Mens and Ladies Clubs. A
particularly good offer is available to new members who may join the Ladies
Club for 50% of the normal rate in their first year i.e. €500 for an
individual or €250 for a lady whose spouse or partner is a
member of the Mens Club. Regards in Golf John Horan Hon Secretary March
15th, 2010 Dear
Member The
Captains Drive-in was a great success yesterday and was thoroughly enjoyed by
the large number (almost 100) of golfers who participated. John
and Frances made a "vintage" entrance in a buggy which
was reminiscent of a bygone era. Their drives were vintage also - right down
the middle and were greeted with applause from the members and guests. The
scramble competition results were as follows: 1st:
Liam O'Loughlin, Basil Phipps, Stephen Byrne, John Kilbride
60 2nd:
John Hyland, Frances Lambe, Paul Fitzpatrick, Noel Reilly
60.4 3rd:
P N Whelan, Noel Kelly, Alan Rice, Ann Horan (on countback) 61.3 The
Presentation of these prizes and some outstanding ones from earlier
competitions took place after an excellent Buffet lunch in Adrian's Bar. Thanks
were expressed to a number of people involved in the organisation of the
event and in particular to General Manager John Caffrey, to Norma in the Golf
Shop and to the Course and Catering staff. Adrian's
Bar: Adrian's
Bar will re-open for golfers from 10 a.m. each day from Saturday 24 April
onwards. In the meantime breakfast will continue to be available in the main
Hotel. Captains
Prize: Arising
from some unforeseen clashes in dates it has been necessary to make some
changes to planned fixture lists for later in the summer. The first
round of the Captains Prize
for the Gents will take place on Sunday 25 July and the final round
will be played thirteen days later on Saturday 7 August. You may wish to note
this in your diaries and if you wish to stay overnight in Tulfarris on the
night of the Captains Dinner (7 August) it would be advisable to contact the
hotel straightaway and book your room as these will be allocated on a
"first come" basis. Be sure to advise the hotel that you are
booking under the "Golf Club's quota". The
first round of the Lady Captains Prize takes place on Sunday 18 July and the
second round on Sunday 25 July with presentation of prizes at the Captains
Dinner on 7 August. Other Schedule
changes to the Fixture lists will be published on the notice board and the
website. Course
News: The
good news is that the 6th hole has been restored to its former glory and was
in play yesterday. Well done to everyone involved.Elsewhere on the Course the
major drainage
programme got underway this morning and will continue for a few weeks. Easter
Open Competition: The
Easter bank holiday weekend Open Competitions take place on Sunday 4 April
and Monday 5 April. Entry fees are Members €10 and Visitors €25. This is an
opportunity to encourage fellow golfers to come along and experience a
Championship Golf Course at its best. Time sheets are available in the Golf
Shop (045 867609). Fees: Members
should by now have received their Resort Invoices and their GUI/ILGU Club
levies invoices. We would encourage you to make these payments to the
Golf Club. Haiti: The
Club has received an acknowledgement of the Members contribution of €500
towards the Irish end of International Medical Charity "Partners in
Health". If you want to find out more about their work log on to www.PiH.org Regards
in Golf John
Horan Hon.
Secretary March
30th, 2010 Dear Member Pierce Purcell Shield: The team manager for the Pierce
Purcell Shield interclub competition in 2010 is Mick Curran. He is keen to
continue the Club's strong showing in this event and is assembling the
strongest possible panel from those who have signalled their willingness to
participate. Regrettably, some team members from previous campaigns are
unavoidably not available for this year's qualifying date of Saturday 22 May.
Accordingly, Mick has asked me to let
the members know that he is in the market to sign up a small number of
additional members to the panel. The competition is played by teams from each
club consisting of ten members and play will be by foursomes medal play on
the qualifying day and foursomes match play in the subsequent rounds (for
which we will undoubtedly qualify!). In order to be eligible to compete
players must have had a handicap which was not less than 12 during calendar
year 2009. The combined lowest playing handicap of each pair during 2009
shall have been not less than 27. Ideal combinations would therefore be
12/15, 13/14, or thereabouts. Players must be over 18 years of age on 1
January 2010. So if you were in the 12 to 16
handicap range in 2009 and are interested in being considered for selection
please contact Mick Curran on 087-6671401. Barton Shield Tulfarris' first round outing in this
competition is against Milltown at 2.00 p.m. on Friday 9 April with home and
away matches. Team Manager, Pearse Daly would welcome any and all support
which Club members would like to give at either venue on the day. Good luck
to all involved. Pin Positions For those of you who played on Sunday
last and had to "endure" rather than "enjoy" some unusual
pin positions on some greens I have been asked to assure you that this was a
one-off abberation which resulted from some mis-communication. Clearly, there
are differing interpretations of the term "difficult". We have been
assured that there will not be a recurrence of this problem. Easter Opens There are still lines available for
the Easter Weekend Open Competitions on Sunday and Monday 4 and 5 April. The
format will be fourball betterball and the entry fee is €10 for a member and
€25 for a visitor. This is a good opportunity to show off your course to your
golfing friends. Timesheets are available at 045 867609. Weekend Competitions As mentioned previously we intend to
introduce "weekend" competitions on a trial basis starting
from Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 April. This should facilitate those
members who might prefer to play on Saturday mornings and should free up some
spaces on the Sunday timesheet. Facilities for payment of your
entry fee into the new Club Safe will be available on the day and
instructions will be posted on how to proceed. Golfer of the Year (GOY)
events will continue to be played on Sundays only. Annual Subscriptions/Levies You should by now have received your
invoice from the Receiver so just a gentle reminder that your annual
subscriptions and levies are due for payment. Happy Easter From a snow covered Blessington I
wish you all a Happy Easter and a quick change to some better golfing weather
in the days and weeks ahead. John Horan Hon Secretary April
16th, 2010 Dear Member Weekend
Competitions Tomorrow and Sunday sees the start of
our "Weekend" competitions. This will not apply to any Golfer
of the Year (GOY) events. Accordingly, it is possible for
members to play on either Saturday or Sunday mornings during Members
Competitions Times. The timesheet is in the Golf Shop as usual. It will not be possible to have
"Starters" on site on both days so a new procedure for signing in,
making your payment and entering the Competition has been established as
follows: 1. Arrive giving
plenty of time to check in and reach your tee time as a courtesy to your
playing partners 2 Check-in your
card or membership number on the Computer as usual - numbers available in white
book below printer 3 Tick your
name off on the timesheet 4 Fill out the
envelope provided with the details required 5 Place entry fee
of €10 in envelope and seal envelope and place in the new safe (not in
score card box) 6 On completion of
your round enter your score as normal on the Computer 7 Make sure to
place your score card in the normal score card box (not the
safe). Vs
Par This format may not be familiar to
everyone so I will try to explain it as best I can. The scoring is made as you do in
Matchplay except that on this occasion your opponent is the Course. You must
try and match (a half) or beat (a win or a plus) "your par" for
each hole. For example, the par for an 18 handicapper is 1 shot over the
standard par for each hole as shown on the printed score card. On your score card your marker should
record your gross number of strokes for each hole where you make a score
equal to or less than "your par" for that hole.If your score
is worse than "your par" for that hole you can pick up and move on.
This is similar to "scratching" the hole in stableford and will
represent a loss of hole (or a minus) as in Matchplay. The winner of the Competition will be
the Golfer who has the highest aggregate of pluses over minuses Ground
Under Repair With the improvement in underfoot
conditions it has been possible to commence the major drainage programme on
the Course. The net result of this work will be obvious as you make your way
around the Course. Given the extent of the new drains, and the inevitable
machinery tracks, it is simply not practical to mark all these areas as
Ground Under Repair. However in accordance with Rule 33.2,
on behalf of the Committee such areas are deemed to be "Ground Under
Repair" for the foreseeable future. New
Membership Cards As you may have heard the GUI has a
new sponsor and accordingly are re-issuing Membership cards for
everyone. These will be available from the first week in May and more details
will be given to you at that time. Members payments of Social Levies will be
"loaded" or "credited" onto their cards when they are
being issued. May
Bank Holiday Weekend Opens Open Days will be held on Sunday 2
May and Monday 3 May and again this is a good opportunity to show off our
Course. Time sheets are available in the Golf Shop and the entry fee for
members is €10 and for visitors is €25. Enjoy your weekend golf and I hope
the ASH gives us a wide berth. Yours in golf John Horan Hon Secretary April
25th, 2010 Dear Member The Interclub competitions are in
full swing with Tulfarris teams involved in a number of competitions at a
range of handicap levels. Yesterday afternoon Peter
Sherwin (Player/Manager) and his Provincial Towns (Handicap 9) team
took on Baltinglass on a Home and Away basis. Unfortunately on this
occasion we came out second best to an excellent Baltinglass team. Our
thanks go to Peter and to Myles Burke, James McCarron, David Reid,
Mick Curran, Pearse Daly, Peter Pedersen, Steven Cullen and Cuan MacAogain. Team manager (and player
also) Noel Kelly and the Lisheen Trophy team (Handicap 16 to 18)
represented Tulfarris in this one day event played at South County Golf
Club this afternoon. Again our thanks go to Noel and his teammates Mattie
Nugent, Paddy Doyle, Paul Reid and Pat Mahon. They represented the Club with
great distinction, finishing second of the twelve teams competing in the
event which was won by our close neighbours Blessington Lakes Golf Club. The Barton Cup team (played on a
foursomes basis with each pair having a minimum combined handicap of
14) take on Dublin City in the second round of this
competition on Saturday 8 May at 3.00 p.m. Team Manager Pearse
Daly says that he would welcome all the support he can get on the day
- either in Dublin City at Ballinascorney or in Tulfarris. The South Leinster managers John
Britton and Noel Kelly have also appealed for members to support their team
in their second round on Sunday 9 May against Glenmalure. This competition is
also played on a home and away basis (handicap minimum 16) and support
in the form of ball spotters would be particularly welcome in Glenmalure,
given the challenging terrain on that course. Matches tee off on both
courses at 2.00 p.m. Incidentally, John Britton is not
just a winning manager. As I entered my score today in the Committee
Prize I saw that John was in the lead with a great score of 41 points. Well
done to him.On this point, Competition Secretary Les Broderick has asked that
members be reminded to ensure that their scores are entered on the Club's
computer system immediately after their round each weekend. Some people are
in the (bad) habit of not entering their (bad) scores (in particular) and
this has the effect of distorting the Standard Scratch for that competition. Rounding up the interclub scene
Brennan Cup Manager, Joe Gardner (known locally as "Jose - the Special
One" after last years great win in this competition) tells me that he
has just learned that Tulfarris has a "bye" in Round 1 this
year and will begin the defence of their title in June against either Mount
Wolseley or Kilkenny. Some members have been enquiring
about Club Jumpers and I can tell you that these are available from
Inspire Sport Ireland Ltd, 25L The Prism Complex, Ballymount Court Business
Centre, Ballymount Road Lower, Walkinstown, Dublin 12. Tel 016877930. I can
also tell you that this company will embroider the Tulfarris Golf
Club logo on jumpers or any other clothing item that you bring to them.
The cost involved is relatively minor for the embroidery. In this regard
the Club "Uniform" for interclub competitions is Navy Jumper, White
Polo Shirt and Beige trousers for the mens club and Black Jumper and Trousers
with a White Polo Shirt for the ladies. The timesheets are now available
in the Golf Shop for the May Bank Holiday weekend Opens. Finally, as April 30th is fast
approaching I should remind members that the Receiver is adamant that this is
the cut-off date for membership renewals for the year March 2010 to February
2011. So if you have not already done so please make your payment now if
you wish to remain a member of the Club beyond the end of the month. Sorry to
be so blunt about this but it is something beyond our control. Just as
soon as all the subs and levies are in we will be issuing new GUI membership
cards to everyone. These will be preloaded with the social levy which you
have paid and you can begin to use them then to get your 10% discount on
food and beverages in Tulfarris. Regards in Golf John Horan Honorary Secretary PS By the way, do you know why they
called the game "golf"? Apparently when it was invented all the
other "four letter" words had been used up! May 9th,
2010 Good News, Bad News and Great News May
11th, 2010 Dear Member May 19th, 2010 Dear Member
Following last night's monthly Committee Meeting a number of matters will be of interest to you.
GOLF COURSE REPORT Despite the fact that growing conditions are approximately 4 weeks behind normal the fertilising and maintenance of the Course seems to be having the desired effect. Members will have seen the extensive drainage work with the "slits" now being filled with sand and overseeded. In addition 500 tonnes of sand will be applied to the Course in the near future as top dressing which will ultimately make a significant improvement to the quality of the Golf Course.
MEMBERSHIP Renewals have now been completed and I am pleased to say that overall Membership numbers have held up well. It will not come as a surprise to you in the current difficult economic climate that a number of members have not renewed but these have been replaced with new members joining.
GUI CARDS/SOCIAL LEVY The Golfing Union of Ireland have launched a new Member Smart Card. These new cards replace your existing cards. In addition they will be credited with the amount of the Social Levy that you have paid and can be used for the purchase of food, beverage, accommodation, green fees etc in Tulfarris. Their use will also entitle you to a 10% reduction on food and beverage purchases. Your new Card will be available for collection from Norma in the Golf Shop from this coming weekend. Lady Members should bring their existing ILGU cards to Norma and she will credit their levy amounts.
Incidentally, in order to encourage you to register your new Card with golfnet.ie the GUI is offering prizes for those who do so before 31 May 2010. Instructions on this are included with your new card and are also posted in the Golf Shop.
GUI HANDICAPS The Handicap Secretary, Phelim Dolan, has asked me to remind Members about the importance of retaining "your" handicap. This matter has been dealt with by a notice on the Tulfarris website for a number of years. In essence it says that in order to retain your handicap in any season it is necessary to return a minimum of 3 qualifying scores in the preceeding year. Failure to do so will result in your handicap being "starred" which will compel players to produce 3 cards for the purpose of re-instating your handicap. A player whose handicap is "starred" is ineligible to win any prizes while so "starred". If you have any queries in this regard please email Phelim at pdolan71@gmail.com.
OPEN COMPETITIONS The June Bank Holiday Opens take place on Sunday 6 and Monday 7 June. These fourball betterball events are an excellent opportunity to showcase your Course to your friends and we would encourage as many as possible to participate. The entry fees are €10 and €25 for members and visitors respectively. Similarly, the Semi Open Competition on Wednesday 16 June is another such opportunity with fees of €10 and €20. Time sheets are available in the Golf Shop.
WEDNESDAY SCRAMBLES These sociable Club competitions will start on Wednesday 2 June and will run through the summer (except on Wednesdays of Semi Opens) so we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. These 2 person (any combination) 9 hole scrambles tee off between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. and are followed by the presentation of prizes in the Hotel bar afterwards. Entry fee is being maintained at the princely sum of €2 per person. I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday evenings.
CLUB MATCHPLAYS The Club singles and doubles matchplay competitions are underway and Members are reminded to have their first round matches completed by the deadline of 1 June.
INTERCLUB COMPETITIONS This is a busy weekend on the Interclub front with Tulfarris participating in the Pierce Purcell Regional Qualifier at Roundwood Golf Club at 12 noon on Saturday 22 May. Team Manager Mick Curran is confident that the Club will get through to the Regional Semi Finals and Final which will be played on the following day Sunday 23rd.
Barton Cup Team Manager, Pearse Daly and his team play their 3rd round match against Blessington Lakes at 4.00 p.m. on Sunday 23rd on a Home and Away basis. This has all the ingredients of a "local derby" and bragging rights will be up for grabs!
Both teams would welcome any and all support from Club Members over the weekend. Good luck to all involved.
Regards in golf
John Horan Hon
Secretary June 9th, 2010 Dear Member, Thanks to all the members who turned
up for the Scramble this evening. Despite the threatening skies which were there
from early afternoon we had a good turnout and again some good golf was
played in the blustery (but thankfully dry) conditions. The scores were tightly packed with
no less than 8 pairs within 2 shots of each other from 9th place down to 2nd.
In 2nd place with a score of 31.6
were Nigel Fisher and Alan Rice and the winners were Mags and Kieron Ryan
with an excellent score of 29.8. Well done to them. As the Club is running one of its
Semi Open Competitions next Wednesday afternoon (16 June), we will not
have our weekly Scramble but these will resume the following Wednesday (23
June). There are still some lines available for the Semi Open and you can put
your name down by calling the Golf Shop 045 867609. The entry fees are €10
per Member and €20 for your Visitors. Separately, I have been asked to
remind Members that Adrian's Bar is now open on Sundays from midday onwards
and food and drink will be available for us after our golf. Don't forget
to avail of your Golfing Union cards when paying so as to use
your Social Levy payment and get your 10% Member's discount. Finally, Tulfarris will be
participating in the qualifiers of the Jimmy Bruen Shield at 12.00 noon on
Saturday 12 June, and if successful will be back again on Sunday morning
(13th June) for the regional semi-final, and the final in the afternoon. The
competition takes place in Kilkea Castle Golf Club close to Castledermot
and the Manager Jerry Lambe and the team would welcome members
support during the competition. Good Luck to all involved.
Regards in Golf John Horan, Honorary Secretary June
18th, 2010 Dear Member
Semi Open Wednesday's semi open had some spectacular scoring and was won by Barry Cramer playing off 16 (not any more) with a great score of 47 pts. Well done Barry. Mick Curran was second with a great 44 pts and Seamus McGrath was third with 41 pts.
Brennan Cup Tulfarris begins its defence of the Brennan Cup title with a first round outing against Kilkenny on next Sunday 20 June. All matches are "away" in Kilkenny and the tee-off times begin at 3.00 p.m. Assistant Team Manager Paul Fitzpatrick has said that as much support as possible would be welcomed on the day. Best wishes to Paul and the team.
Website Peter Pedersen continues to develop the Clubs website www.tulfarrisgolfclub.ie and has added a new section on the "Current News" page for archives of these Updates. The website has a wealth of information on club activities including one or two areas that are for members only. The password for these is tulfarris Our thanks go to Peter for this and all his great work on the site and to Brendan Daly for the suggestion which prompted this latest development.
Sunday Tee Times The new Saturday option for playing non-GOY competitions seems to be proving a success. Members are reminded that in the event of the Sunday reserved Ladies tee times (9.30, 9.40 and 9.50) not being utilised by close of business on Friday these times can be used by members of the Mens Club by having their name put down on the sheet from Saturday morning onwards.
Resort News We have just heard from General Manager John Caffrey that following on from a detailed inspection of the course and the operations of the Resort in in relation to golf that Tulfarris has received the Failte Ireland Golf Standards Award and as such will be listed as a golf course of best practice on all Failte Ireland golf related marketing material. Congratulations to John and all his team.
In this regard and with the recent spurt in grass growth some areas of rough have been causing "grief" to some members and these and some other matters have been brought to the attention of the Resort. We recognise the limitations which exist in relation to staffing numbers and finances and recognise the good work that is being done and have put forward our comments in a constructive way.
I would also remind members that Adrians Bar is open for business after golf on Sundays and we would encourage as many as possible to avail of this facility.

Wednesday Scrambles Our scrambles continue on each Wednesday - teeing off between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. with prize presentation immediately afterwards. We look forward to seeing you there.
Presidents Prize Day The Presidents (Tom Bryan) Prize competition takes place on Sunday 27th June. As is usual this will have a shotgun start at 9.30 a.m. so that we can all finish together and have the presentation of prizes immediately afterwards in Adrians Bar. Our thanks go to the Ladies Club for facilitating this by holding their competition on Saturday.

Horan, Hon Secretary June
26th, 2010 Dear Member We had another great turn out for our Wednesday Scramble,
played in ideal golfing conditions with the Course in really good shape. The
new bar food menu in the Hotel helped to round off a very enjoyable evening. With 11 pairs within 2 shots of second position
the competition was keen. In 2nd place with a nett score of 29.8 were Lady
Captain, Frances Lambe and Dave Reid. The overall winners, with a really good 28.4 were
James and Ita McCarron. Congratulations to them. Just as a reminder the Presidents (Tom Bryan) Prize
to the Ladies is being played on Saturday. The Presidents Prize for the men is scheduled for
Sunday with a shotgun start at 9.30 a.m. If you have not already done so you
can get your name on the timesheet by calling the golf shop. The competition
will be followed by the presentation of prizes immediately afterwards. The Wednesday Scrambles continue each week from
here on with tee off times between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. Regards John Horan, Hon Secretary July
1th, 2010 Dear Member Despite the threatened rain (which
thankfully did not materialise) there was a good turn out for this evenings
scramble. Scoring was good in a strong wind and
in 2nd place were Noel Reilly and Corena Lavin Reilly (in her first ever
scramble competition) with an excellent score of 28.8. Corena says that her
prize will now take pride of place alongside her husband Mark's Captains
Prize from 2009! The first place team could boast of an eagle two
on the par four 5th hole, which helped them with their gross 33 and a winning
nett score of 27.6. Well done to Tom O'Rourke and Pat Curley. Pat, along with
Noel A Kelly, is acting as Convenor for the Tulfarris Junior Members and this
also was his first Wednesday Scramble. Finally, we send our congratulations to Cuan
McAogain and his wife on the recent birth of their son, Cuan Og. Perhaps that
might also explain why Cuan did not make it among the prize winners this
evening, although he and his partner, Cliff Anderson were not that far away. Thanks to all those who attended and we look
forward to seeing as many members as possible next week. John Horan, Hon Secretary July
15th, 2010 Dear Member Another big turn out for the
Wednesday Scramble and this time we were playing the back nine. The scores
reflected the slightly tougher task and while there were a large number of
pairs grouped with scores in the 30 to 32 bracket only two managed to
breach this number. In 2nd place were Mike Pierre (his
first outing in these scrambles) and Joe McConville with a very respectable
29.6. The winners on the night were John
and Mary Curley with a good 29.4. Congratulations to them. Next Wednesday is the July Semi Open
and there are still lines available and we will be back again for the
Scramble on Wednesday 28 July. The Captains Dinner as you know is on
Saturday 7 August and tickets will be available for purchase from the Starter
from next Sunday onwards. The draw sheet for the first round of
the Captains Prize will be available then also and you can put your name down
in one of the half hourly blocks and a draw will be made for each of the
lines within these half hour periods. One last reminder also that there are
still some rooms available for booking in the hotel for the night of the
Dinner for those who wish to stay over. Finally we send our best wishes to
Lady Captain Frances for a successful first day of her Prize competition on
next Sunday. Regards July
28th, 2010 Dear Member
This evening we had 40 golfers for our Wednesday Scramble and more than the usual share of excitement.
Past Captain Gerry Lambe "aced" the sixteenth with a perfectly hit rescue club. The ball rattled the pin and flew straight into the hole. His son Ciaran who was his partner in the scramble and their playing partners Joe McConville and his son Daragh were on hand to witness the event which was reported on in full detail in the Hotel bar afterwards as Gerry treated all present to the customary drink. Well done to Gerry on what was his second hole in one. Perhaps this is a good omen for Gerry's horse which runs in Galway tomorrow - No One Tells Me (I think) is the name for those of you who are into these things!
The hole in one contributed to Gerry and Ciaran's net score of 28.4 which got them second place. They were pipped at the post by a great score of 28 from Shemus Dore and Lindsay McGuire.Congratulations to both of them on their win.
These scrambles are becoming somewhat of a family occasion. In addition to fathers and sons Joe and Daragh and Gerry and Ciaran we also had Noel A and Alan Kelly. The Lambes were also represented by Lady Captain Frances and their daughter Claire. John and Mary Curley were accompanied by their son Eoin and their "prospective daughter in law" Catherine Hayes. Noel Reilly was partnered by his daughter in law Corina Lavin Reilly. P N Whelan played alongside his nephew Cian. The biggest family contingent on the night must surely have been Tom and Ann Daly, with their son Brendan and daughter in law Ann Murphy Daly and their three grandson caddies Mark, John and Colm. In addition to these family connections there were all the other usual "odds and sods" who turn up each week in ones and twos and get paired off on the evening so feel free to come along and join in the fun each Wednesday.
There must be something in the water around Tulfarris because in the last Club competition - the first round of the Captains Prize - long time member and all round good guy Richard Cowley "aced" the second hole on his way to the top echelons of the leader board. Richard also used a rescue club as he drew the ball in off the bank on the right of the green and into the cup. Richard treated as many members as he could find - and many seemed to find him - in the Hotel bar on Sunday afternoon. Well done to him also.
Richard will have a late start on Saturday week 7th August for the second round. If you want to check your tee time you can call the Golf Shop next week or you can have a look at the Club's website www.tulfarrisgolfclub.ie. There you will find a "provisional" draw sheet which will be updated over the weekend. If there are any members who played in the first round and cannot play in the second please let us know now so that the final time sheet is not disrupted on the day. Similarly if there are any members who did not play on Sunday who now wish to play in the second round please let us know also. I would remind those members that there are still prizes on offer such as Day 2, Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive - not to mention the Captains "goodie bag".
There are still some tickets available for the Dinner and these can be purchased at a cost of €35 each by contacting Vice Captain Pearse Daly on 085 1743751 or at dalypd@eircom.ie. Tickets can also be purchased from the Starters at next weekends Open Days.
For those of you with an interest in the statistical end of things a quick look at last Sunday's scores shows a really closely packed leader board. In contention for the Captains Prize are at least 30 players who are within 6 shots of the leaders. That is not to exclude the rest of us who are slightly futher adrift. Of these 30 players 14 players are single handicap golfers and sixteen are 10 upwards. So it would seem that the Captains aim of having as wide as possible a field of contenders going into Day 2 has worked. Lets see what delightful pin positions he sets up for us on the 7th.
There are still some lines available for the Open Days on Sunday and Monday 1 and 2 August. You can book your time by contacting the Golf Shop - 045 867609.
Finally, Tulfarris got honourable mention in the All Ireland Pitch and Putt winners speech last weekend when Declan McCarron thanked his brother James for arranging for him the use of the practice putting green at Tulfarris ahead of the event. I am not sure if he got any particular putting tips from James, or is it the other way round! Congratulations to Declan.

(Course Superintendent), Norma in the Golf Shop, Derek, Darren
and their colleagues in the Bar and Restaurant - for all their great
work in preparations for these events and over the past year. It really is
appreciated by the members. The Committees of both the Mens and
Ladies Clubs were the subject of kind comments from both Captains. Finally, on behalf of the members I
would pass on thanks and congratulations to the two Captains, Frances and
John, for the huge effort they have made over the course of their year todate
and specifically in ensuring that their Captains Prize Competitions and
Annual Dinner were so successful and enjoyed by so many. On behalf of the
members tokens of our appreciation were presented to them last night as
mementoes of their year in office. Regards in Golf John Horan, Honorary Secretary August
18th, 2010 Dear Member Despite the threatened (and actual)
heavy rain storm we had 28 golfers taking part in this evenings scramble
which was played on the back nine. In 2nd place with a score of 30.0
were Club Treasurer Niall Robinson and his wife Maria Carville. Well done to
them. The overall winners were Myles Burke
and Cian Whelan with a great score of 28.8. Congratulations to Myles who
featured in second place last week when he was accompanied by a slightly
"older model" in Conor Kinnerk. Particular congratulations to
young Cian, one of our Junior Members. The Tulfarris Juniors are beginning
to make a name for themselves with Cian winning the Putting competition at
the GUI/ILGU Junior Open Event in Castlewarden on Monday. On the same day
Claire Lambe won the Nearest the Pin competition at the same event. There
were reports that she was seen to out-drive her Mother on some holes tonight! Pat Curley, Noel A Kelly and Frances
Lambe are doing great work with these younger members and tonight Noel asked
me to see if Members could donate some of their used golf balls to
the Junior section for their practice sessions on Saturdays. Noel A will
arrange to have a collection box for these balls in the Golf Shop from this
coming weekend onwards. Your help would be appreciated. Next week will be our final Wednesday
Scramble for this year and I look forward to seeing as many as possible
taking part. Towards this end, and given that the evenings will be closing in
from hereon, we might start a bit earlier from say 4.30 p.m. onwards
with the last tee-time at 6.20 p.m. The presentation of prizes will take
place immediately after the golf in the Hotel Bar and we will have some
complimentary finger food refreshments available to round off a
successful summer of scrambles. Regards John Horan, Hon Secretary August
25th, 2010 Dear Member This evening we had 32 members taking
part in our final Wednesday Scramble for 2010. Since 2nd June we have had 11 such
events with an average weekly turnout in excess of 30 members. Given that
there were four prize winners each week, that allowed for the possibility of
44 winners in total. With some members winning or coming second more than
once we were never going to have that outcome but having analysed the weekly
results including this evenings, 37 different individuals won prizes - the
handicapping system surely works! Of these, there were 9 separate ladies
among the prize winners and 2 juniors. I should digress here to tell you
that a very successful junior semi open was held in Tulfarris on Monday
- well done to Junior organisers - Pat Curley, Noel A Kelly and Frances
Lambe. The juniors have been well represented all along in the weekly
scrambles by people such as Claire and Ciaran Lambe, Cian Whelan, Dara
McConville and so on. From what I heard tonight the golfing bug is spreading
among some younger members of other families such as the Robinsons, with
daughters Ciara and Aoife turning out on Monday along with Rebecca
Edwards. Back to the analysis of the scrambles
- the winning weekly scores up to tonight ranged from 26.6 to 29.8. The
runner up position was achieved with scores of 28.0 to 31.6 over the previous
10 weeks. From these you will appreciate just how good tonights winning
scores were. The runners up this evening with a
score of 26.5 - which would have won on any other night - were
Treasurer, Niall Robinson and Maria Carvill. Well done to them. The winners had a fantastic score
with no less than seven 3's in the 9 holes. They were Captain John
Hyland and Stephen Cullen. Congratulations to them on a wonderful net score
of 25.4. The summer's scrambles were rounded
off with the usual presentation of prizes in the Hotel bar and tonight's
event was rounded off with some finger food kindly provided by
General Manager, John Caffrey. We send our thanks to him. Finally, a big thank you to all those
members who participated in the scrambles, and in the
"afters". Regards John Horan Hon Secretary September
8th, 2010 .......REMINDER.......4 DAYS LEFT TO GET INVOLVED
IN A SOCIABLE GOLF DAY AND TO SUPPORT GOOD CHARITABLE CAUSES.......DETAILS IN
COPY OF PREVIOUS EMAIL BELOW.......GET YOUR NAME DOWN FOR THE CAPTAIN'S
CHARITY DAY.......CALL GOLF SHOP NOW (045 867609)....... Dear Member The Captain, John Hyland, has
asked me to tell you that his Charity Day has been changed from the original
diary date of Saturday 11th September. It will now be held on the
following day Sunday 12th September. The charitable causes being supported
this year are ARC cancer support and The Scoliosis Department in Crumlin
Children's Hospital. The day will begin with
registration from 8.30am onwards and a multi-tee shotgun start at
9.30am. The format will be a sociable 4 person Scramble open to men and
ladies, members and guests. The entry fee for a team of 4
players will be €25 per person (€100 per team). The presentation of
prizes will take place immediately after the golf. In order to boost the proceeds, all
of which will go to the chosen charities, sponsorship of each tee will be
possible - just give the Captain a call on 087 2712644 if you wish
to have your name or your firm's name associated with the event. A
raffle will also be held on the day. Teams can consist of members,
members and guests, or just guests. If you are coming to play on your
own, or with say one other person, every effort will be made to make up teams
of four. So if you want to have an enjoyable day's golf and support good
charitable causes give the Golf Shop a call on 045 867609 to get on the timesheet.

23rd, 2010 Dear Member Captains
Charity Day Captain John Hyland has asked me to
pass on his thanks to you for your support for his Captains Charity Day. The
ARC Cancer Support Service and the Scoliosis Department, Crumlin Hospital
were the worthy recipients of the proceeds. Their representatives who
attended on the day expressed their gratitude for this contribution to their
work. Saidbh Turner, Keith's daughter, was the undoubted star of the
occasion when she spoke so eloquently on behalf of Crumlin. Use
of GPS on Course The Committee has asked me to remind
members that the use of distance measuring devices is not permitted
during Club Competitions in Tulfarris. Social
Levy Members are also reminded that, if
they have not already done so, they should ensure that their "Social
Levy" amounts are used for the purchase of food and beverage,
accommodation, green fees and purchases in the Golf Shop before the end of February
2011. It really is a case of "use it or lose it". Some
Selected Dates for your Diary The PNW Trophies competitions take
place this Sunday 26 September. October Bank Holiday Open Weekend -
Sunday 24 and Monday 25 October. End of Year Scramble, organised by
the Ladies Club and kindly sponsored by Jerry Lambe - Sunday 31 October
- Shotgun start 9.30 a.m. Finally and importantly, the 2010 AGMs for both the Mens and Ladies
Clubs will be held at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday 21 November 2010 in Tulfarris.
Papers for the meeting will be issued later. Golf on that day will be a
shotgun start at 9.30 a.m. Regards in Golf John Horan Hon. Secretary October 27th, 2010 The Clubs' end of year Scramble will take
place on next Sunday 31 October with registration from 8.30 a.m. and a
shotgun start at 9.30 a.m. The golf will be followed immediately by the
presentation of prizes. The competition is very kindly and generously
sponsored by Jerry Lambe and we send our thanks to
him. If you wish to get your name in for the draw please do so in the next
few days by calling Norma in the Golf Shop on 045 867609. Competition Secretary Les Broderick
tells me that the Men's Club will be using this opportunity to present all
outstanding Medals, Prizes, Vouchers and Twos money. Les also has asked me to pass on
details of the Winter League Competitions. Full details are also posted by
Les in the Golf Shop for your information. The leagues commence on Sunday
7th November 2010 and will continue through to the end of February 2011. The
singles league will be calculated from each players best scores in 50% of the
rounds played, plus 1 round. All players will be automatically entered into
the singles league. For the doubles league players must
nominate their partners on the entry sheet provided in the Golf Shop. It is
important that this is done before the
league commences. Each pair's score will be calculated by using the
combination of their individual best scores in 50% of the rounds played, plus
1 round. There is no additional entry fee for these events over and above the
normal Sunday competition fee. As advised previously Resort General
Manager John Caffrey is moving on to manage the
Osprey Hotel in Naas. At a formal Liaison Committee Meeting tonight John
introduced us to his replacement, Mark Howell. We look forward to a
continuation of the excellent working relationship which we have had with
John and we wish Mark well in his time at Tulfarris.
Incidentally, Mark lists "golf" among his many interests and is
currently playing off a handicap of 5. The meeting was attended by the
Captains, John Hyland and Frances Lambe, President
Tom Bryan, Vice Captains Pearse Daly and Ann Horan
and the Hon Secretaries John Horan and Olive Whelan. Among the matters
discussed were the Calendar of Events for the Club's
21st Anniverary year - 2011, retention of existing
members and the attracting of new members to the Club, the golf shop and
other aspects of the Resorts operations and how they can best meet members'
requirements. There was an extensive discussion on Course matters and a more
detailed follow up Greens Committee meeting will be held in the
very near future with Head Greenkeeper, David Brady
and the new General Manager. Formal notifications and related
documentation will issue shortly for the Annual General Meetings which are
scheduled for Sunday 21 November after golf. I am pleased to tell you
that the Resort will host a finger food buffet reception immediately
after the AGMs and we send our thanks to them for this generous gesture.
Please put the date in your diary and perhaps you might want also to
note that the Christmas Scramble is scheduled for Sunday 5 December. Finally, members keep on getting holes
in one. Our congratulations on this occasion go to Myles Burke for his ace at
the Par 3, fifth hole in Baltinglass last Saturday.
The bottom of the pin was not visible from the tee box so the excitement
only began when they got to the green. Well done to Myles for his first ace -
the way he plays it was only a matter of time! Regards in Golf John Horan Hon. Secretary November 17th, 2010 Dear Member Annual
General Meetings: The AGMs will take place in Tulfarris at 1.00 p.m. on Sunday next, 21 November,
after Winter League golf which tees off at 9.30 a.m. with a shotgun
start - registration at 9.00 a.m. If it should happen that the
morning's golf had to be cancelled or curtailed (e.g. for weather reasons)
the AGMs will go ahead as planned at 1.00 p.m.and
will be followed by a finger food buffet which is kindly hosted by the Resort
Management at approximately 2.30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for Members
to meet the new General Manager, Mark Howell who I
am glad to say is joining the Golf Club also. Winter
League: For the duration of the Winter
League competition the Committee has decided that Conditions of Play will be
"Placing everywhere". In the event that you are in a bunker you can
play the ball as it lies or you can "Rake and Place". Of course you
should rake again after your shot so the routine should be Rake, Place and
Rake again. In order to ensure that as many people as possible get a chance
to win each week the Committee has also decided that each weekly winner will
have a one shot reduction in their handicap each time they win. This is an
"internal" cut only for the duration of the Winter League and
will not affect members handicaps in any other
competitions. Frost: Head Greenkeeper,
David Brady has posted important notices in the Golf Shop in relation to the
substantial damage which foot traffic causes to frozen greens and we would
encourage all members to read these and to follow their guidance closely.
David points out that in the event of frost occurring "it is essential
that golfers do not play to main greens or use the practice putting green
when green staff have put temporary greens in play.
The green staff realise that temporary greens are not popular with the
membership but that they are a necessary evil. Temporary greens will only be
used as a last resort". In relation to frost delays it is important that
golfers do not go out on the course until the all clear has been given
through the Golf Shop. While we are on course matters we
should say how pleased members have been with the condition of the course,
and the greens in particular, despite all the heavy rains that have been
experienced in recent weeks. Well done to David and his team. Looking forward to seeing as many of
you as possible on Sunday. Regards John Horan Hon Secretary November 24th, 2010 Dear Member We had over 40 members at the AGM
held on Sunday. The following Committee were elected for the forthcoming
year. Captain:
Pearse Daly Vice Captain:
Niall Robinson Hon Secretary: John
Horan Hon. Treasurer:
Cuan MacAogain Committee: Keith
Turner, Les Broderick, Ciaran Curley and Noel A
Kelly In addition to these Tom Bryan
continues his term as President and John Hyland remains on
Committee "ex officio". Among the motions adopted was a
change in the eligibility age for Juniors from 13 years down to 10 years of
age. It was also agreed "that the
incoming Committee be authorised to devise and implement a system, including
sanctions, if necessary, to deal with the problems created by "No
Shows" for tee times". The new Committee will be considering this
matter and will revert with their proposed approach in due course. The Resort's new General Manager,
Mark Howell, joined the meeting and outlined his plans for Tulfarris. For 2011 our annual subscriptions
will be unchanged. The social levy of €100 will NOT be charged to existing
members but we will get a credit of this amount on our GUI Card to spend in
the coming year - compliments of the Resort. The
usual arrangements for couples will continue to apply. This is the Resorts
way of saying thank you to existing members for their patronage in the past
year and was well received by the members
present. With a view to incentivising existing
members to encourage their friends and colleagues to join Tulfarris,
the Resort will waive the €100 social levy for the new
joiners who are nominated by an existing member. In addition the
existing member will receive a further credit of €75 on their GUI card for
each new member who joins at their instigation. In addition to the above all the
other business appropriate to the AGM was fully attended to and the
members then adjourned to a finger food reception kindly hosted by
the Resort. The Winter League
continues, except on Sunday 5 December when we have our annual
Christmas Scramble. This will be a shotgun start - 9.00 for 9.30 a.m. Be sure
to get your name down - and note the earlier comment about "No
Shows"! We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at
this festive gathering. Finally, Captain Pearse
Daly has the calendar of events for 2011 virtually complete and this will be
available soon on the Club's Website and will be circulated later in hard
copy. We will keep you up to date with developments as they occur in the
months ahead. Regards John Horan Hon Secretary November 24th, 2010 Dear Member There is still more than a foot of
snow on the golf course at Tulfarris and it will
not be open tomorrow Sunday 12 December. The Christmas Scramble will now take
place on next Sunday 19th - weather permitting of course - registration at 9
a.m. and shotgun start at 9.30. I hope that the severe weather has
not inconvenienced you too much and hopefully we are seeing the end of
it for sometime to come. In this regard I am sure you will be
like me in envying Mattie Nugent who you may know emigrated
with his family to Australia in September. He is joining a golf club down
there and in an email to me during the week he mentioned in passing
that he had his front and back doors open to create a balmy cooling
breeze through the house at 9 p.m. in the evening. The contrast! Regards John Horan Hon Secretary |
