. Dear Member

Captains Charity Day:

The following message has been received from the Captain, Pearse Daly.

"It's that time of year again, the Captains Charity Day in Tulfarris is on Saturday 24th September. There are still lines available in the Golf Shop. To those of you who have already put your names down thank you. If for some reason you cannot attend there will be a chance to sponsor a tee box for €20. I’m aware of the tough times we all have to face on the economic front but both charities need our support. They do excellent work and I have seen the results that they produce. Full details are set out below. If you wish to sponsor a tee box email me at dalypd@eircom.ie or phone me on 085 1743751.

Competition for Juniors:

The Junior section of the Club is going from strength to strength with regular coaching and practice sessions for them. Noel A Kelly tells me that they had a great turn out of young members for their special Junior competition held on Sunday 4th September. Link to Juniors Page for Competition results and photos.

President's (Tom Bryan) Prize:

As is usual, the President's Prize competition scheduled for Sunday 18th September will be a shotgun start. In order to facilitate those with an interest in the All Ireland Football Final being played later that day the competition will tee off at 8.30 a.m. SHARP.

You can register in the usual way online or by ringing the Golf Shop. Be sure to get your name down in good time for the draw which will take place on Friday 16 September.

The Presentation of Prizes will take place immediately after the golf and we look forward to a good turnout for this major event in the Club's golfing calendar.

Regards

John Horan

Hon Secretary

On a separate note the Tulfarris Committees have appointed a sub-committee under the chairmanship of Noel Reilly to produce a booklet about the past history of the Club as part of the 21st Anniversary celebrations. It is planned to have the booklet available for distribution to all members by the time of the AGMs in November. The sub committee wishes to involve members in the production of the booklet by coming forward with anecdotal stories of their experiences in Tulfarris "both good and bad!".

Members with interesting tales to tell should contact Noel Reilly at 086 2553530 or by email to noel_reilly@eircom.net. Alternatively they can contact the other members of the sub-commitee as follows: Ann Horan 087 24662100, Tom O'Shea 087 2656166, Madeleine Drew Byrne 086 8247044, Jim Corley 085 7203979.

Know your rules.

In additional to the following link to R&A rules quizzes, I recently found a valuable web site which contains interesting updates on Rules and interpretations which I would recommend.  http://www.barryrhodes.com/

Click on the following for  Video Clip Procedures :

Lateral Hazards (Red Stakes)      Note Local Rule below                                                       - Nearest Point of relief

                                 - Water Hazards (Yellow Stakes)                                                                                           - Relief from an immovable obstruction

Local Rules:

18th hole Tee shots over right hand fairway bunker & lost. ( introduced July 2011)

A permanent Dropping Zone has been created on the pathway between the lakes to the right of the first bunker on the 18th hole. This is designed for shots which carry over that bunker and then "disappear" from view and are obviously in that water hazard ahead of that bunker. The new local rule will be posted in the Golf Shop in this regard.

Local Rule Regarding Distance Measuring Devices: ( Introduced May 2011)

For all club competitions at this course, a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-                    measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.

Ground Under Repair – ( Introduced April 2010 )

With the improvement in underfoot conditions it has been possible to commence the major drainage programme on the Course. The net result of this work will be obvious as you make your way around the Course. Given the extent of the new drains, and the inevitable machinery tracks, it is simply not practical to mark all these areas as Ground Under Repair.

However in accordance with Rule 33.2, on behalf of the Committee such areas are deemed to be "Ground Under Repair" for the foreseeable future.

Water Hazards – Provisional Ball ( Introduced Sept 2009)

A provisional ball may be played for a ball which may be in a water hazard where it would be impracticable to determine whether the ball is in the hazard or to do so would unduly delay play. In such case, if a provisional ball is played and the original ball is in a water hazard, the player may play the original ball as it lies or continue the provisional ball in play, but he may not proceed under rule 26.1.

Or in plain English for example, if you hit your ball across the water on a hole such as the 17th and you are not sure if it cleared the water, you may hit a provisional ball on to the green and if you go around the lake and find your original ball in a playable position inside or outside the hazard line you can continue to play your original ball and ignore the provisional ball.

Of course it would be easier all round to stay out of the hazards in the first place! We can always dream!

Local Rules Clarifications – when in place as per starters board.

Placing              “A player can play it as it lays or has the option to mark and place within 6 inches everywhere except in Hazards.”

Dropping in Rough      “A player must Mark and drop the ball as near as possible to the original ball position, if the ball rolls outside of one club length it must be re-dropped.”
